Grizzly Bear Cam

Have you ever watched bears catching salmon in a river? Well thanks to technology we can all watch the brown bears at McNeil River in Alaska. One of my favorite pastimes is to watch the grizzlies catching salmon on the bear cam. These grizzlies or brown bears gather in the river located in the McNeil
River State Game Sanctuary. The sanctuary covers about 200 square miles with no roads and has the largest amount of wild brown bears in the world. It’s normal to see from 20-40 bears at one time during the peak in July. Normally brown bears are solitary but they congregate at McNeil Falls to eat the fish that are slowed by the rocky falls. All five species of Pacific salmon are present in the sanctuary but the bears are especially attracted to the Chum salmon (or dog salmon) that spawn in this river each year.
In order to protect the bears and people the Alaska Department of Fish & Game has an access permit program that allows no more than 10 people at a time to observe the bears at McNeil Falls.
The bear cam is on from 6:00am to 10:00pm AST, daily.
